Czech household wealth heavily concentrated in real estate

A study by the IDEA Institute at CERGE-EI reveals that while Czech households appear wealthy on paper, their assets are heavily concentrated in real estate. The average household wealth is approximately 100,000 euros, a figure comparable to families in Germany or Finland.

However, a significant disparity exists in how wealth is distributed. Approximately 80 percent of all Czech family assets are tied up in residential property, such as houses or apartments. In contrast, direct ownership of stocks is held by only five percent of households. This trend is attributed to the massive privatization of the housing stock during the 1990s, which subsequently saw property values rise significantly.
