Czech Hydrometeorological Institute releases mushroom growth probability maps

The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) provides an official probability map to assist mushroom foragers in locating optimal growing areas. The map utilizes a system that combines soil moisture saturation from the previous 30 days with current temperature trends. Areas showing green on the map indicate high growth potential, while red indicates drought conditions.

Promising locations for foraging include the Vysočina region, Šumava, Jeseníky, and parts of Moravia and Silesia. Higher elevations like the Krkonoše and Krušné mountains are noted for better moisture retention during summer heat. For optimal results, foragers are advised to visit forests a few days after rainfall when temperatures are between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius.

Safety remains a critical priority during the season. Experts recommend only picking mushrooms that are 100% identifiable to avoid poisoning. When harvesting, twisting the mushroom rather than cutting it can help preserve identifying features like the bulb or volva located at the base. Additionally, using wicker baskets instead of plastic bags is essential to allow airflow and prevent spoilage.
