Czech insurance and police protocols for vehicle damage
In the Czech Republic, distinguishing between vandalism and an accident is critical for insurance claims. Vandalism involves intentional damage, whereas an accident is unintentional. Standard compulsory liability insurance typically does not cover vandalism; owners may need specific vandalism coverage or comprehensive insurance (havarijní pojištění) to ensure repairs are covered.
Regarding police involvement, the threshold for mandatory reporting of accidents without injuries has increased from 100,000 to 200,000 CZK as of July 1, 2025. However, police must still be called in several specific scenarios regardless of the damage amount: if a parked vehicle is hit, if there are any injuries, if road infrastructure like signs or lights are damaged, or if the damage clearly exceeds the 200,000 CZK limit.
Insurance product evaluations show that Direct pojišťovna led in the compulsory liability category with a 100 million CZK limit, while ČPP’s Allrisk product was highly rated in the comprehensive category for covering theft, natural disasters, and vandalism.
