Czech Interior Minister announces salary raises for police and firefighters

Czech Interior Minister Lubomír Metnar has announced a salary increase for police officers, firefighters, customs officers, and prison service members. Over the next three years, these employees will receive monthly raises of between 2,600 and 2,900 CZK. The plan includes an annual tariff increase of 1,300 CZK, though this specific component has met with opposition from labor unions.

The Ministry of the Interior aims to raise the average salary for police and firefighters to over 65,000 CZK per month. Additionally, the government intends for the starting salary for these roles, following professional training, to reach 50,000 CZK by the beginning of 2029. To support these services, the government plans to add approximately 1,500 police positions and 100 firefighter positions, while also allocating 240 million CZK toward cybersecurity and 50 million CZK for volunteer firefighters.

Labor unions, including the Union of Security Forces (UBS) led by Aleš Lehký, have expressed dissatisfaction with the proposal. The UBS is demanding a 10 percent increase in basic tariffs rather than the proposed split between tariffs and stabilization bonuses. Union leaders intend to coordinate with other security sector unions to request meetings with Prime Minister Andrej Babiš and Finance Minister Alena Schillerová.
