Czech lawmakers prepare proposal for same-sex marriage
A new legislative push for same-sex marriage is being prepared for the Czech Chamber of Deputies. Karel Dvořák, Vice-Chairman of the STAN movement, announced his intention to submit the proposal later this year following cross-party discussions.
To build consensus, a working group including representatives from STAN, TOP 09, and ANO is scheduled to meet in late August. Pirate MP Lenka Martínková Španihelová noted that while the number of deputies explicitly supporting marriage equality has risen to approximately 60, and those strictly opposing it has fallen to about 40, roughly 100 lawmakers have yet to express a definitive position.
Political support remains divided. While TOP 09 and the Pirates are actively backing the measure, opposition groups such as the Motorists and SPD remain firmly against it. The ultimate success of the proposal is expected to depend on the stances of individual deputies within the ANO and ODS parties.
