Czech literature and history highlight personal struggles

Recent literary and biographical features highlight complex human experiences in the Czech Republic, ranging from contemporary fiction to historical accounts of post-war life.

In her latest novel, ‘Normální dítě’ (2026), author Tereza Kopecká explores the life of Anežka, a fourteen-year-old girl suffering from generalized anxiety disorder. The story follows Anežka and her parents as they move from Plzeň to the countryside in an attempt to find a healthier lifestyle. The narrative examines the strained relationship between a daughter struggling with fainting spells and a mother whose protective instincts and fixation on an ideal family structure complicate the girl's recovery.

In a separate historical account, the life of Marianna Tomašovská is detailed. Born in 1947 to Sudeten German parents in Bučnice, Marianna’s childhood was shaped by the aftermath of World War II. Following her father's service in the Wehrmacht and her mother's death from cancer, Marianna and her brother faced extreme hardship. The account describes their struggle for survival on the streets and the hostility they encountered from local communities due to their ethnic background.
