Czech 2026 local and Senate elections attract record number of candidates
More than 16 political groups have filed candidate lists for the 2026 municipal election in Brno, two more than in 2022, while Prague sees 24 lists and Ostrava 13. Across the Czech Republic, communal elections are scheduled for 9‑10 October 2026, with voters in 27 districts also choosing senators. The Senate’s first round will be held on the same dates, with a possible second round on 16‑17 October.
Prominent figures are entering the Senate race: former army chief Karel Řehka is running in the Plzeň district, former mayor Jan Grolich contests a seat in South Moravia, and former minister Martin Dvořák (STAN) seeks a seat in the capital region. In Brno, the ODS‑TOP 09 joint list is led by TV producer Kamila Zlatušková, while other parties present coalitions and independent candidates.
The Czech Statistical Office will operate a dedicated server providing XML‑formatted election results exclusively to registered media outlets, ensuring real‑time access for journalists during the vote count.
