Czech mammoth sculpture crafted from mining scrap unveiled in Brno

Two freight trucks carrying ten tonnes of iron from decommissioned mining machines at Dolů Bílina arrived in Brno. Artists from the REC Group will use the material to create a life‑size mammoth sculpture, which will be installed in front of the Ústecký kraj office.

The project links the region's industrial heritage with a major archaeological discovery of mammoth remains in the Bukov area of Ústí nad Labem. Severočeské doly donated the scrap as a gift, and regional officials plan a public vote on naming the sculpture. Further plans include a 3D interactive guide and a possible virtual‑reality reconstruction of the Ice‑Age landscape.

The sculpture may later be moved to an exhibition in Ústí nad Labem, reinforcing the connection between the mining past and the prehistoric finds now highlighted by local historians and archaeologists.
