Czech MEPs weigh EU Chat Control and mandatory data‑box plan

A Czech Member of the European Parliament highlighted the return of the EU's "Chat Control" proposal, which would enable large‑scale scanning of private messages. The measure, previously rejected by the European Parliament, was re‑introduced through a procedural maneuver, and several Czech MEPs shifted from opposition to supporting a new vote, with five backing an exemption.

Separately, ODS lawmaker Eva Decroix proposed legislation to create compulsory electronic data boxes for all Czech residents aged 15 and older, arguing that digitalisation is unavoidable. The proposal aims to standardise digital communication with public authorities, but raises concerns about increased online dependence and reduced personal choice.

Both initiatives reflect ongoing debates in the Czech Republic over EU‑wide digital regulation, privacy, and the balance between technological advancement and individual freedoms.
