Czech Ministry of Defence faces Volvo security controversy

A controversy has emerged in the Czech Republic regarding employee benefits offered by the Ministry of Defence. The ministry has been promoting discounts of up to 39 percent on Volvo vehicles for soldiers, employees, and veterans. However, certain Volvo models are prohibited from entering military facilities due to security concerns related to their Chinese ownership and advanced technologies, such as permanent internet connectivity and remote data transmission capabilities.

Jana Černochová, Chair of the Parliamentary Security Committee, described the situation as “a bit bizarre,” noting the contradiction between offering the discount and restricting the vehicles. In response, the Czech Army's Communications Troops clarified that the ministry does not initiate or provide these discounts, acting only as an intermediary for the commercial offer. They emphasized that the inclusion of a brand in an employee benefit program does not constitute a security certification or an assessment of the product's technological safety.
