Czech Ministry of Environment halts Heřmanice waste heap case, declares no culprit
The Czech Ministry of Environment decided to stop the four‑year investigation into the Heřmanice heap near Ostrava and announced that no responsible party could be identified. The probe, originally carried out by the Czech Inspection of Environmental Protection, had focused on the presence of hundreds of thousands of tons of illegal construction waste mixed with mining spoil inside the 103.5‑hectare heap.
The case involved the company Ridera Bohemia, which had supplied 568,000 tons of material for a protective air‑separation wall surrounding the heap. A potential administrative fine of up to 25 million Czech crowns was withdrawn when the ministry removed the file from the inspection and terminated the proceedings within two months. New geotechnical surveys conducted weeks later revealed additional findings, but the ministry maintained that the evidence was insufficient to assign liability.
