Czech Ministry of Health issues urgent appeal for blood donations

The Czech Ministry of Health has issued an urgent appeal to both regular and new blood donors following a significant decline in blood supplies across the country. During the summer months, hospital reserves have dropped to critical levels at several locations, including major hospitals in Prague and the University Hospital in Ostrava.

Health Minister Adam Vojtěch noted that the shortage is driven by a seasonal decrease in donors due to vacations and travel, occurring simultaneously with an increased demand for blood due to summer accidents, surgeries, and births. The shortage is not limited to specific blood types but affects general supplies at various transfusion centers.

Additionally, the Institute of Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKEM) in Prague is reporting a severe shortage of blood platelets across all blood groups. The Ministry advises potential donors to check the websites or social media of their local transfusion centers for real-time updates on specific blood types needed.
