Czech Ministry of the Environment targets national park fire prevention
The Czech Ministry of the Environment has established a working group to develop strategies for fire prevention and the sustainable development of national parks. Minister Igor Červený stated that the group will focus on two primary objectives: determining the appropriate amount of dead wood to leave in national parks versus how much should be removed, and improving the overall sustainability and management of these protected areas.
The initiative aims to address increasing fire risks caused by long-term droughts and changing climatic conditions. The working group, led by Vladimír Vlček, intends to improve early detection, water availability for firefighting, and access roads within national parks. Additionally, the group will look into managing tourist traffic to prevent overcrowding in specific areas, such as Krkonoše National Park.
Minister Červený expects to present a strategy to the government that will eventually be integrated into the Nature and Landscape Protection Act, with the first legislative amendments targeted for the second quarter of next year.
