Czech municipal elections see major losses for SPD and left-wing parties

The recent municipal elections in the Czech Republic have seen significant shifts in the political landscape, marked by major losses for established parties. The Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) party experienced a substantial decline, losing 348 council seats, which represents a 63.4 percent decrease compared to previous elections. Independent SPD candidates saw an even sharper decline of 71.7 percent. The party failed to secure any seats in major cities including Prague, Brno, Ostrava, Liberec, and České Budějovice.

Simultaneously, traditional left-wing parties such as the Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) and the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (KSČM) have seen their influence diminish significantly, particularly in Prague. In various Prague districts, these parties either failed to gain representation or received very low percentages of the vote, often running under various coalitions like 'United Left'. In many metropolitan districts, these traditional parties did not appear on the ballot at all, as local groupings continue to expand their presence.
