Czech municipal elections see rise in influencer candidates
As the 2026 municipal and Senate elections approach in the Czech Republic, political campaigning is increasingly shifting toward social media. A notable trend in the upcoming elections is the emergence of candidates identifying themselves as influencers or YouTubers. At least twelve candidates have registered under these professions, ranging from science popularizers and cultural commentators to hobbyists.
Prominent figures include Martin Rota, a science educator with over 60,000 Instagram followers running for the Czech Pirate Party, and Hana Třeštíková, a documentary producer and deputy mayor of Prague 7, who identifies as a cultural influencer.
While digital presence is growing, political analysts note that traditional methods like billboards and personal contact remain prevalent. Campaigns have utilized various tactics, including anti-government messaging and creative slogans, though some marketing efforts have faced criticism for lack of clarity or linguistic awkwardness.
