Czech municipalities face administrative takeover due to lack of candidates
Several Czech municipalities are facing administrative transitions after failing to field enough candidates for municipal elections. In at least five towns, including Píšť in the Pelhřimov region, the Ministry of the Interior will appoint administrators to manage local governance because the number of candidates fell below the legal minimum.
In Píšť, a village of fewer than 80 residents, the appointed administrator will hold office hours once a week. New elections may be held in early 2027 if sufficient candidates emerge. Similarly, in Slavníč, the lack of candidates has prevented municipal elections from taking place.
In Vysoká Lhota, the smallest municipality in the Czech Republic with only 16 voters, election commissions must be staffed by individuals from neighboring towns because no local residents are willing to serve. While the village maintains its independence despite its small size and limited budget, the logistical challenges of maintaining local democracy in micro-communities remain significant.
