Czech municipalities face drought and water supply risks

A drought risk map from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute identifies numerous municipalities in the Vyškov and Hodonín regions facing environmental and water supply vulnerabilities. The map highlights areas where evaporation exceeds precipitation and water runoff is rapid.

In the Vyškov region, 26 municipalities are listed, including Slavkov u Brna and Rousínov, due to natural conditions. Five municipalities, including Kojátky, are also flagged for potential water supply risks. In the Hodonín region, 22 municipalities are identified, such as Kyjov and Vracov, with several others like Petrov facing water supply concerns.

Data from Intersucho indicates significant to exceptional drought in the deeper soil layers across much of Moravia. Recent rainfall has not sufficiently mitigated the deficit. To address these risks, the Ministry of the Environment has allocated 500 million CZK from the State Environmental Fund to support the most vulnerable municipalities, focusing on landscape water retention through measures like creating ponds and thickets.
