Czech municipalities face lack of candidates for upcoming elections
As municipal elections approach in the Czech Republic, several municipalities face a lack of political competition or a complete absence of candidates. In the Znojmo district, over a quarter of the 144 municipalities feature only a single competing party or association. For example, the town of Lukov will see two distinct groups, Pro Lukov and Společně pro Lukov, competing for seven seats after a twelve-year period of uncontested elections.
In other regions, some villages will go without local elections entirely due to internal disputes or a lack of volunteers. In municipalities such as Krchleb, Rokytovce, and Slavníče, no candidates have stepped forward to form a council. These situations often stem from deep-seated community conflicts or the personal burden of local service. In these instances, the Ministry of the Interior will appoint an administrator to oversee the municipalities, though their powers remain limited.
