Czech municipalities implement waste management strategies
Municipalities in the Czech Republic are implementing various strategies to manage waste and mitigate rising landfill costs. In Ostrava, bulky waste accounts for approximately 17 percent of total municipal waste, totaling nearly 20,000 tons in 2025. Deputy Mayor Aleš Boháč noted that while residents have free options such as collection yards and large-volume containers, illegal dumping at standard waste stations remains an issue that increases city costs.
OZO Ostrava processes this waste in Kunčice, recovering wood and iron for material reuse and converting other combustible materials into alternative fuels for cement plants and heating stations. Currently, about 20-30 percent of bulky waste is repurposed, while the rest is landfilled.
In Rudolfov, the municipality has successfully lowered its mixed waste production by 39 percent. By implementing systematic changes—including doorstep sorting for paper and plastic, improved collection yard tracking, and the introduction of kitchen waste sorting—the town reported 144.84 kilograms of waste per inhabitant for 2025. This performance places the town ahead of upcoming 2026 regulations, which will tighten the limit for preferential landfill fees to 150 kilograms per person.
