Czech municipalities increase social housing projects amid limited new construction
Municipalities in the Czech Republic are expanding their social‑housing stock while most new residential units remain driven by private investors. In Znojmo, applicants for special‑purpose apartments face waiting times of about a year, and the city plans several new builds, including senior housing in Brno‑Tuřany, a 300‑unit project in Nový Lískovec, and a 28‑apartment social‑housing complex at U Splavu funded with 61 million CZK for young families, seniors and people with disabilities.
Elsewhere, city councils have focused mainly on renovating existing municipal flats. Olomouc, Prostějov and Přerov added only a handful of new units over the past four years, while large‑scale refurbishment projects restored around 100 previously uninhabitable apartments in Přerov. Other towns, such as Cheb, Karlovy Vary and Kladno, have prioritized repairs, upgrading housing for professionals like doctors and teachers, and preparing sites for future development rather than constructing many new dwellings.
