Czech municipalities prepare for municipal elections amid shifting political trends

Upcoming municipal elections in the Czech Republic are shaping up to be a significant contest for local leadership in towns like Bohumín and Valašské Meziříčí, with the ANO movement showing strong momentum.

In Bohumín, the political landscape is shifting. While the Social Democrats (ČSSD/SOCDEM) held a dominant position in the 2022 elections with 57.47% of the vote, recent regional and parliamentary election trends suggest a rise in support for the ANO movement, which exceeded 50% in the last parliamentary elections. Six candidate lists are expected to compete this autumn, including ANO, SPD, KDU-ČSL, the Communist Party, and local coalitions.

In Valašské Meziříčí, the ANO movement previously secured 43.01% of the vote, leading to a coalition with the ODS and the appointment of Robert Stržínek as mayor. Despite ANO's strength, local political dynamics remain complex, as seen in the previous term where KDU-ČSL moved from a coalition partner to the opposition. Political analysts note that municipal elections in these regions often hinge on local issues and the personal reputations of candidates rather than purely national trends.
