Czech municipalities report varying waste recycling results

Municipalities in the Czech Republic are seeing varying results from waste management and recycling initiatives. In Nový Jičín, a recent public analysis of mixed waste revealed that residents in housing estates could have sorted 67 percent of their discarded content, while those in family houses could have sorted 62 percent. While textile and food waste sorting has improved since 2020, the city noted a decline in the recycling of glass and metals.

To manage rising costs, Nový Jičín has increased landfill fees from 500 CZK to 1,600 CZK per ton after reaching its annual limit. The city aims to improve sorting through further public education to reduce waste management expenses.

In contrast, Česká Lípa has reported success with its door-to-door recycling system implemented last year. Data indicates an increase in the collection of paper, plastics, and organic waste, alongside a reduction in mixed waste. The system, which serves approximately 3,500 addresses, is expected to result in over 350 additional tons of correctly sorted material compared to the previous year.
