Czech mushroom foragers face shifting seasons and higher fines

Mushroom foragers in the Czech Republic are utilizing growth probability maps developed by meteorologists and the Czech Mycological Society. These maps indicate soil moisture levels based on rainfall over the previous 30 days and average temperatures from the past week. While green areas suggest favorable conditions, they do not guarantee a successful harvest.

Due to a dry summer, the peak season has shifted later than usual. While warm temperatures can aid growth, consistent rainfall is essential as mushrooms are composed of over 90% water. Forecasts suggest limited rainfall through late October, though a potential increase in precipitation is possible in mid-October.

As foraging activity increases, particularly in regions like Vysočina, foresters are issuing warnings regarding illegal parking and forest access. Unauthorized entry into forests or parking that obstructs forest roads can result in significant fines. The penalty for unauthorized forest entry has doubled to 10,000 CZK, while collecting protected species can lead to fines of up to 100,000 CZK. Additionally, smoking or littering in the forest may incur fines of up to 30,000 CZK.
