Czech National Bank introduces savings product for municipalities

The Czech National Bank (CNB) has introduced a new savings account product for municipalities and regions, offering a 3.7 percent annual return with immediate liquidity. This initiative aims to allow local governments to better manage their funds while providing the state with a source of capital to finance the budget deficit, potentially reducing the need for expensive bond issuances.

The proposal has sparked political debate regarding the management of municipal funds. Prague, which holds nearly 200 billion CZK in reserves, has been a focal point of criticism from Finance Minister Alena Schillerová, who has urged local governments to utilize state treasury products rather than keeping low-yield balances in commercial banks.

Political candidates for the Prague mayoralty have expressed differing views. Tomáš Portlík (ODS) warned that Prague faces significant upcoming investment needs, including over 400 billion CZK for projects like Metro D and wastewater treatment plants, making any potential reduction in tax revenue distribution a major risk. Conversely, Jan Hušbauer (ANO) dismissed speculations regarding government plans to divert funds from major cities as disinformation, noting that the current administration has not effectively utilized its investment potential.
