Czech National Bank reviews crypto licenses under MiCA
The Czech National Bank (CNB) is currently reviewing five applications for crypto-asset service provider licenses following the implementation of the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation. While the CNB supervises 11 already authorized domestic providers, the recent influx of applications reflects a broader shift toward institutionalization in the digital asset market.
Experts note that MiCA shifts the market from a ‘speed-to-market’ approach to one requiring long-term operational accountability, including risk management, client asset protection, and cybersecurity. However, regulators emphasize that licensing does not guarantee the safety of specific tokens or investments. Regulation focuses on the quality and conduct of the service provider rather than the volatility or inherent risks of the underlying crypto-assets.
CNB Bank Board member Jan Procházka advised caution, noting that MiCA does not provide the same protections as traditional investment services, such as mandatory risk tolerance assessments for all users or a universal guarantee fund for asset losses.
