Czech National Bank signals potential interest rate hikes
The Czech National Bank (CNB) is adopting a more hawkish stance regarding monetary policy due to rising concerns over inflation, driven largely by increasing oil and natural gas prices. While the bank recently maintained current interest rates, recent meeting minutes suggest that if energy market tensions and domestic demand remain high, further rate hikes may be necessary.
Economists suggest that the CNB could implement up to four gradual rate increases in the coming period. Such moves could push savings account interest rates toward 5%, though the real return for savers will depend on whether these hikes successfully keep inflation under control. Conversely, if inflation outpaces rate increases, savers may see a loss in purchasing power, similar to trends observed in 2022 and 2023.
On the other hand, consumers with mortgages facing upcoming fixed-rate expirations are expected to face higher costs. Mortgage rates, which currently exceed 5%, could surpass the 6% threshold if the central bank raises the base rate by 1 percentage point.
