Czech-Norwegian researchers challenge long-standing root growth theory

A joint research team from the Czech Academy of Sciences, Charles University, Czech University of Life Sciences, and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology has challenged long-standing theories regarding root growth. The study, published in Nature Plants, reveals that the widely accepted ‘acid growth theory’ does not play a primary role in root development, despite explaining stem elongation.

To reach these conclusions, researchers developed a specialized protein molecule that acts as a miniature pH sensor directly within cell walls. This technology allowed scientists to measure pH levels inside the cell wall rather than the surrounding environment. The findings showed that in areas of most rapid elongation, pH levels were actually higher, contradicting the theory that lower pH levels drive cell wall loosening and growth.
