Czech officials divided over Russian hockey players' participation
Czech government officials are split over the participation of Russian hockey players in international competitions following a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Minister for Sport, Prevention and Health Boris Šťastný announced plans to meet with Foreign Minister Petr Macinka, Interior Minister Lubomír Metnar, and hockey federation representatives to discuss the implications. Šťastný has already filed an official protest with CAS. While he noted that the state should not dictate how independent federations organize competitions, he suggested a minimum requirement of competing under a white flag without a national anthem.
In contrast, government plenipotentiary Filip Turek expressed support for allowing Russian athletes to compete, arguing that politics should remain separate from sports. Turek noted that sports can provide a platform for athletes to symbolically oppose their own regime.
Other officials, including Deputy Speaker Patrik Nacher, criticized the CAS decision, citing potential security concerns and the risk that other teams might boycott tournaments if Russian players are permitted to participate.
