Czech Ornithological Society launches bird protection initiative

The Czech Ornithological Society (ČSO) has launched the ‘Glass Killer Week’ to address the high mortality rate of birds caused by collisions with glass surfaces. The organization estimates that up to one million birds die annually in the Czech Republic due to impacts with building facades, shop windows, and reflective bus stops.

To combat this, the ČSO is calling on the public to report dead or injured birds found near glass structures via an anonymous form or the birds.cz database. This data helps ornithologists identify high-risk locations and provides a basis for discussions with property owners. Experts suggest that simple, low-cost solutions, such as applying decals or stickers with a density of no more than ten centimeters between elements, can effectively mitigate the danger.
