Czech parliament considers Miroslav Hlaváč for chief of General Staff

The Czech Chamber of Deputies' Defence Committee met to review the government’s proposal to appoint Brigadier‑General Miroslav Hlaváč as the new Chief of the General Staff. Current chief Karel Řehka will step down on 31 August, and Hlaváč, the first deputy since August 2023, is the sole nominee.

Defence Minister Jaromír Zůna (SPD) voiced the only dissenting vote, saying his own military experience suggests a different candidate would be preferable. President Petr Pavel has been briefed and is expected to formalise the appointment once the committee’s recommendation is finalised. Hlaváč outlined priorities such as completing a heavy brigade, modernising a medium brigade and enhancing multilevel air‑defence, aligning with Czech commitments to NATO.
