Czech Parliament to debate child support and health insurance laws
The Czech Chamber of Deputies is set to debate several legislative proposals during an extraordinary session. Key items on the agenda include expanding the criminal offense of non-payment of child support and introducing a ‘child certificate’ to prevent offenders from working with children.
A government amendment regarding public health insurance proposes increasing state payments for insured persons such as retirees, students, and the unemployed. The monthly payment per person would rise from 2,188 CZK to 2,479 CZK, an increase intended to ensure the financial stability of the public health insurance system, costing the state an additional 21 billion CZK.
Additionally, lawmakers will consider amendments to the criminal code to increase penalties for domestic abuse and animal cruelty, raising minimum sentences from six months to one year. The debate includes a specific proposal regarding the unjustified killing of cats or dogs for reprehensible motives, a measure that has drawn varying opinions among legislators.
