Czech pension and banking regulations for spouses

New regulations and banking practices in the Czech Republic affect how spouses manage finances and retirement benefits. Starting January 1, 2027, married couples and registered partners will have the option to pool their earnings for the purpose of calculating old-age pensions. This mechanism allows partners to average their combined income from the duration of their union, aiming to mitigate pension disparities between a career-focused partner and one who worked less due to childcare responsibilities. This does not create a joint pension; rather, it shares the calculation basis, meaning each individual still receives their own separate pension.

Regarding banking, the death of a spouse can lead to immediate loss of access to joint or single-owner accounts if proper legal arrangements are not in place. While knowing a partner's PIN or password is insufficient, having formal disposal rights (disponent) can allow a survivor to continue using an account during inheritance proceedings. Some banks, such as Air Bank and ČSOB, permit account usage by a person with valid disposal rights even during probate, whereas other arrangements may result in the bank blocking cards and online access immediately upon notification of death.
