Czech Physical Chemist Pavel Jungwirth Dies at 60

Prominent Czech physical chemist Pavel Jungwirth died at the age of 60. He was a professor at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences, where he led research on molecular simulations of ions at water interfaces and on the transition of substances from non‑metallic to metallic states. In 2022 he received the Neuron Foundation’s lifetime‑achievement award for his contributions to chemistry.

Jungwirth had long collaborations with researchers in the United States, Israel and Switzerland and served as chair of the Learned Society from 2020 to 2022. Colleagues and friends remembered him as a leading scientist with international renown and a warm personality.
