Czech PM Andrej Babiš under EU conflict‑of‑interest pressure over Agrofert and mining fund

Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) faced criticism after energy group Sev.en, owned by billionaire Pavol Tykač, announced it would not finance post‑mining remediation through the State Environmental Fund but would allocate any saved money directly to the affected municipalities. Babiš reportedly expressed anger about the decision while on vacation, describing the situation as “thunderbolts and lightning.”

Former EU commissioner Pavel Telička warned that the European Union could withhold EU subsidies for Babiš’s Agrofert conglomerate because a conflict‑of‑interest case remains unresolved. He said the EU may impose fines and that the issue is being covered by the European Commission, highlighting broader concerns about the prime minister’s business ties and the coalition’s handling of the matter.
