Czech and Slovak authorities tackle rising cybercrime and online fraud
Authorities in the Czech Republic and Slovakia are intensifying efforts to combat rising digital threats, including cyberattacks, online fraud, and social media extortion. The Czech Police have launched a Virtual Prevention Center, a digital space designed to provide accessible advice on cybersecurity, domestic violence, and the safety of seniors and children.
In the Liberec region, police reported significant financial losses due to online scams, including a senior who lost nearly three million CZK to a fake investment tax scheme and another individual who lost over four million CZK through fraudulent cryptocurrency instructions. Law enforcement noted that victims span all age groups, from youth facing blackmail to seniors targeted by sophisticated investment frauds.
Experts and politicians are also calling for better digital literacy and cooperation between institutions. Mária Krahulecová, co-founder of the Qubit Conference, emphasized that parents must set strict online rules for children to navigate anonymity and potential grooming. Meanwhile, in parliamentary discussions, officials highlighted the need to balance urban security technologies with privacy and the importance of systemic drug prevention in public spaces.
