Czech political opposition faces leadership and thematic challenges

Political analyst Daniel Kunštát has identified several key weaknesses within the Czech political opposition that hinder their ability to challenge Andrej Babiš and his ANO movement. According to Kunštát, the opposition suffers from a lack of clear, strong leadership, an absence of topics that resonate with a broad voter base, and overall fragmentation.

While parties like STAN and the Pirates have recognizable leaders, the former coalition parties (ODS, KDU-ČSL, and TOP 09) are currently led by relatively new figures—Martin Kupka, Jan Grolich, and Matěj Ondřej Havel, respectively—who have yet to establish the same level of national recognition as their predecessors.

Furthermore, Kunštát notes a disconnect in political messaging. While the opposition focuses on institutional and value-based topics such as the Constitutional Court, NATO, and the EU, these issues primarily mobilize existing critics rather than persuading undecided voters. Economic and social concerns, such as housing, healthcare, and the cost of living, remain the primary priorities for the electorate, yet these are not the central themes driving the opposition's agenda.
