Czech political parties form unusual local alliances ahead of elections

Political tensions are rising in Prague ahead of municipal elections as current coalition partners clash over policy and performance. Tomáš Portlík, leader of the Spolu coalition (ODS and TOP 09), has criticized the Pirates Party regarding transportation issues and urban policy, suggesting that a continued partnership with them would be difficult. Conversely, Pirate leader Tereza Nislerová has criticized the Spolu coalition for insufficient progress on housing.

In Prague, several coalition scenarios are being considered. The Spolu coalition could potentially bypass the Pirates by forming an alliance with the Mayors (STAN), though Portlík has noted that a narrow majority in the 65-member assembly could lead to instability. Meanwhile, the ANO movement is largely maintaining its own independent brand across the country.

On a broader national level, municipal elections in the Czech Republic are seeing unusual ideological shifts. Local alliances are forming that would be unthinkable in national politics, with parties such as the SPD seeking cooperation with left-wing groups, including Communists, in certain municipalities to secure local influence.
