Czech political shifts as TOP 09 members defect to KDU-ČSL

Recent municipal and senate election results in the Czech Republic have highlighted the benefits of cooperation among opposition parties. The Association for the Support of Liberal Democracy in the Czech Republic provided financial support for campaigns in thirteen senate districts to candidates backed by at least four opposition parties. This funding was distributed among movements such as STAN, ODS, KDU-ČSL, and TOP 09.

In a notable development in South Moravia, TOP 09 chairman Marek Sovka and approximately thirty other members announced their departure from the party to join KDU-ČSL. While KDU-ČSL leader Jan Grolich noted a significant increase in new memberships since April, the defection has caused friction. TOP 09 chairman Matěj Ondřej Havel expressed frustration, suggesting the move was coordinated months in advance.
