Czech pre-war fortifications preserved as historical sites
Historical military fortifications built in Czechoslovakia during the late 1930s are being preserved and showcased as cultural heritage sites. These structures, part of a massive defensive system designed to counter Nazi German aggression, were largely left unfinished due to the Munich Agreement.
In Karlštejn, a small bunker known as a 'řopík' has been restored to its 1938 appearance after years of being filled with concrete by occupying forces. Local enthusiasts worked to remove the German-installed concrete to recover the original structure.
Meanwhile, the Dobrošov Fortress near Náchod remains a significant site for visitors. As an unfinished complex, it offers a unique look at military construction from the era. The site currently features exhibitions on the evolution of fortifications and provides insight into the defensive efforts of the period.
