Czech President Pavel to Sue Government Over NATO Summit Delegation

President Petr Pavel announced at the Globsec security conference that he will file a constitutional complaint against the Czech government if he is not included in the country's delegation to the NATO summit in Ankara. He said he will wait until the government’s decision deadline on 8 June before proceeding, and that any refusal would prompt him to appeal to the Constitutional Court.

Pavel emphasised his desire to attend the summit’s informal heads‑of‑state dinner and the security‑policy debates, while the government, led by Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, indicated that the delegation – likely comprising Babiš, Foreign Minister Petr Macinka, Defence Minister Jaromír Zúna and others – will be finalised after the June 8 meeting. The president also used the briefing to call for stronger EU‑NATO cooperation and reiterated support for Ukraine, noting his participation in previous NATO summits in Vilnius, Washington and The Hague.

The dispute reflects a constitutional clash over the president’s prerogative to represent the Czech Republic at a major NATO gathering in Turkey.
