Czech President Pavel vows court fight if barred from NATO summit delegation

At the Globsec security forum in Prague, Czech President Petr Pavel announced he will wait until the government’s decision on 8 June regarding the Czech delegation to the NATO summit in Ankara. He warned that if Prime Minister Andrej Babiš’s cabinet excludes him from the official delegation, he will bring a case before the Constitutional Court, arguing that such a move would violate the president’s constitutional powers.

The dispute centers on who should represent the Czech Republic at the crucial NATO meeting. Babiš has insisted on his own participation and has previously rejected proposals for a joint Czech‑government representation. Pavel has also criticised the government’s defence‑spending figures, which he says are insufficient for the country’s security commitments. The clash follows a failed attempt at a diplomatic compromise at Prague Castle and reflects a broader tension over the balance of foreign‑policy authority between the Czech president and the prime minister.

The Globsec conference itself highlighted wider European security challenges, including the erosion of the post‑Cold‑War rules‑based order, energy security, and the need for a stronger European defence posture.
