Czech Parliament debates law to curb president's foreign‑service powers

The lower house approved a proposal to amend the foreign service law, removing the president’s authority to appoint and dismiss heads of permanent missions to international organisations. Opposition lawmakers described the change as unconstitutional, while government supporters said it merely clarifies existing practice. TOP 09 deputy Jiří Pospíšil called the move a “political slap” against President Petr Pavel, and ANO MP Radek Vondráček defended the amendment as a reasonable adjustment. Law‑maker Kolář characterised it as an attempt to limit presidential competencies. The amendment is part of a broader civil‑service reform and is expected to be reviewed by the Constitutional Court.
