Czech President Petr Pavel’s heavily guarded visit sparks criticism at Slovak Pohoda festival

Czech President Petr Pavel attended the 30th Pohoda music festival in Trenčín, Slovakia, on 11 July 2026. He was accompanied by a personal security detail of about twenty to thirty bodyguards, a deployment arranged by the Slovak Office for Protection of Constitutional Officials. By contrast, former Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová travelled with a single guard.

The size of the Czech president’s escort provoked sharp criticism from Slovak officials. Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba posted on Facebook, asking “what memes would appear in Denník N if any government official arrived surrounded by thirty bodyguards?” and likened the scene to a war‑zone. Former police chief Tibor Gašpar also mocked the security presence, saying it resembled a visit by Donald Trump. Both officials used the episode to question the necessity of such extensive protection for a foreign head of state at a cultural event.

Pavel’s visit also included a joint discussion with Čaputová, during which he referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as a “fan of the Ukrainian front” and defended Ukraine’s fight, comments that further fueled debate among Slovak politicians.
