Czech ministers hissed at Strážnice folk festival spark political showdown
During the International Folk Festival in Strážnice on 27‑28 June 2026, ministers of culture Ota Klempíř and foreign affairs Petr Macinka were repeatedly booed, whistled at and shouted “Vypadni!” by the audience. Both officials described the crowd as hostile, blaming heat and alcohol, while accusing spectators of “buranství”.
Vice‑premier Alena Schillerová (ANO) condemned the Motorist party’s behaviour, saying the festival is meant for enjoyment, not political speeches, and rejected calls to cut state subsidies for the event. The National Institute of Folk Culture, which organises the festival, distanced itself from the political outbursts, stating the venue should not be used for agitation. Opposition parties (Pirates, ODS, STAN, SPD) also accused the ministers and their party of politicising a cultural gathering and demanded apologies.
The controversy has reignited debate over the festival’s public funding and the propriety of politicians appearing at cultural events.
