Czech Republic agricultural yields hit decade low

The Czech Republic's basic grain harvest for 2024 has fallen by 16 percent to 6.46 million tons, marking the second-worst result in a decade, surpassed only by the drought of 2018. According to estimates from the Czech Statistical Office, total grain production, including corn for grain, dropped by 17.6 percent.

Adverse climatic conditions, including spring frosts, prolonged drought, and high temperatures during the growing season, were the primary drivers of the decline. Rapeseed yields fell by more than 20 percent to 803,000 tons, the lowest level since 2005. Corn for grain production also saw a significant decrease, falling by one-third compared to the previous year. Other affected crops include potatoes, sugar beets, and poppy.

Sunflowers provided a rare positive note, with yields benefiting from a significant expansion in sown area.
