Czech Republic and Slovakia to implement easier online contract withdrawals

New consumer protection regulations in the Czech Republic and Slovakia will mandate that online retailers provide a simple, highly visible method for customers to withdraw from contracts. This change, which transposes European Union directives, aims to ensure that canceling a purchase is as easy as making one.

In the Czech Republic, the legislation passed by the Chamber of Deputies is expected to take effect on January 1, 2027, following the Senate's review. E-commerce sites and apps will be required to include a clearly marked button or a similar easily accessible control element, such as a well-placed hypertext link, to facilitate withdrawals. This right typically applies within a 14-day period following the receipt of goods.

In Slovakia, the new rules regarding the right to withdraw from consumer contracts are set to be implemented by June 2026. The regulations clarify when the withdrawal period begins, such as upon receipt of the final part of an order or the first item in a recurring delivery. Suppliers must also provide clear and understandable information regarding the conditions, deadlines, and procedures for exercising these rights.
