Czech Republic birth rates hit 240-year low

The Czech Republic is experiencing a significant decline in birth rates, with last year seeing the lowest number of births in 240 years. Parenthood is also shifting toward an older demographic, with first-time mothers averaging 29 years of age.

Dr. Pavel Otevřel, a reproductive medicine specialist at Reprofit, suggests that the primary driver for delaying pregnancy is not career ambition, but rather a lack of suitable partners. He notes that the current demographic trend is also influenced by a smaller cohort of women born in the 1990s.

Medical experts warn that increasing age impacts reproductive chances, specifically regarding the quantity and quality of eggs. While factors such as financial uncertainty and global security play roles, the absence of a partner remains the most decisive factor in the decision to delay starting a family.
