Czech Republic boosts renewable sharing and gains EU capacity support

In the first year after the July 2024 launch of the new community‑energy sharing system enabled by the Lex OŽE II amendment, Czech participants exchanged 34 GWh of electricity – enough to supply more than 11 000 households. The system recorded about 25 000 consumption points and 17 000 production points, though half of the transferred power is lost in the process.

Separately, the European Commission approved Czech capacity mechanisms that will guarantee partial returns for investors in new electricity generation. The scheme, running from July for ten years with contracts up to 15 years, is backed by a budget of up to €6.2 billion and will support all technologies, including gas, storage and renewables. Minister of Industry Karel Havlíček called the decision a “key step for Czech energy.” The first auctions may start in October, with initial gas plants expected around 2031.
