Czech Republic building law reform sparks debate over centralization
A proposed amendment to the Czech building law aims to accelerate construction permits by replacing dozens of individual opinions with a single, integrated process. The reform includes the creation of a Czech Republic Territorial Development Office, which would handle major projects through a one-step procedure resulting in a legally binding decision.
During a meeting of the ‘Základy budoucnosti’ initiative, experts discussed the potential for faster construction starts. However, concerns were raised regarding the risks of centralization and the potential for personnel shortages to hinder the reform's effectiveness. The new legislation shifts the legal philosophy to treat development as a public interest, requiring the new authority to balance various public needs.
