Czech Republic celebrates railway heritage with steam locomotive excursions

Rail enthusiasts in the Czech Republic celebrated significant railway milestones through various historical events. In the Třebíč region, the 140th anniversary of the rail connection between Velké Meziříčí and Studenec was marked by the return of the steam locomotive 555. 129, nicknamed ‘Němka’. The locomotive operated trips between Velké Meziříčí and Studenec, stopping at Rudíkov and Budišov.

The celebrations in Velké Meziříčí included exhibitions of historical Tatra driving cars, railway mechanisms, and approximately forty vintage Tatra automobiles. The legendary 1936 motor car ‘Slovenská strela’ was also on display. This rail line has served the region for trade and travel since its opening in 1886.

In Bohumín, the regional Railway Day marked the conclusion of a series of events celebrating the Day of Railwaymen. The Bohumín depot opened its doors to the public, offering steam train rides to Petrovice u Karviná and special trips on former mining tracks between Ostrava and Bohumín. The event featured model railways, musical performances, and access to areas of the depot typically closed to the public.
